reasons to be cheerful

summer thunderstorms.
autumn winds fluttering leaves before my car.
S_ laughing at corny jokes.
perfect sentences.
elderly couples holding hands.
the chatter of foreign children in a playground.
cackle of a group of old women.
girls wearing fake moustaches.
cities at sunrise, at night, at rest, buzzing.

  1. A young child's delight at seeing the moon...again. It never gets old for them, and that never gets old for me.

  2. I suppose it's really, really naff to post a poem I wrote, but then I know I'm going to anyway, so I will slap my face in advance (my face, I emphasize, oh ye ... never mind). I've been told that the reference to nosehair ruins this, but it deserves to be ruined.

I like the way birds rise before us
to have quality time they can share,
the way trees go to ground in the winter
and turn their roots up in the air.

I like the way spiders have legs that
    appear to be made out of nosehair;
how the moon can be a paper lantern
    a headlight, a host, or a camembert.

I like the way someone says goodnight
when the other one says just the same,
and forgetting disputes of the evening,
how we sleep till the birds sing again.

  3. The morning fog on a lake in the summertime, soon to burn off into a gloriously sunny day.

The faces of children as the snow starts to fall.

And the reaction of kids of any age when they learn the hotel they're staying in has a pool.

  5. Another just brought to mind by a friend:

    Girls in baseball caps.

  6. Cool wine on a hot day; the way whisky warms you on a cold one.

That brief interlude at the break of day when everything is at peace.

    Happy dogs. Content cats.

The cool spot under the covers.

Sitting around a table with friends sharing a laugh.

  7. When you are walking down the street and you see someone smiling to themselves. I love that and ponder for blocks what it was they were thinking about.
