God is found in many places

Look at ole' Terry in the first picture and then look at the two boys on the right in the second.

Ecstasy of St. Theresa by Bernini

Big Jay McNeely by Bob Willoughby

I am appalled at English's lack of words for this experience. The closest I could find was Theosis. Theosis kind of means "oneness with god". All them foreigners have great ones like Wajd. C'mon people, help me out. We have to have a good one.

  1. Ecstasy is what comes to mind:
Used by 17c. mystical writers for "a state of rapture that stupefied the body while the soul contemplated divine things" Ref: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=ecstasy

Teresa's mystical experience would probably be called ecstatic, and I think she levitated as well didn't she? Well, er... you can make up your own jokes.

  2. Yeah. That's a good one, but it's looking a bit threadbare as word since the mid-90's rave scene.

  3. Hmm, but words are always being devalued. For example, "virgin" now evokes a dirty big diesel engine, a pushy tart in a red skirt, or an insufferably smug geezer with a goatee beard. But maybe words are resilient, like the roots that grow back after hair colour fades.

  4. b.t.w. isn't that Lee Harvey Oswald, second from the right?

  5. It's either Oswald or Montgomery Clift.
